Maine Landscape Photography

It was a warm October day when I set out last autumn to Acadia for fall foliage photos. The drive up was beautiful. I was surrounded by bright reds, yellows, and oranges as I passed by. I eagerly anticipated the fall foliage landscape photos that awaited me. However I discovered upon arrival that the Schoodic Peninsula is primarily coniferous trees. The photos therefore experienced a lack of colorful foliage. However, the trip was not wasted. Schoodic made up for the limited fall leaves with stunning ocean views. As I walked down the winding hidden trail to the edge of Ravens Nest, the wispy clouds moved in on the breeze to create this beautiful image. I printed this in a historic process known as kallitype. The kallitype is a iron-silver printing process using ferric oxalate and silver salts. This limited edition print is available for sale in my shop. The black coloring of the kallitype enhances the dramatic skies. Sitting at the edge of the cliff, I could have stayed here for hours enjoying this view listening to the crashing waves below, but there was more to see.

At low tide I climbed down a rocky coast to get closer to the ocean. Cadillac Mountain was visible across the ocean in the hazy distance. Carefully jumping over gaps in rocks I made it down to the edge where waves were crashing against a huge rock standing out against the surf. Strong waves crashed against it causing the salty water to spray up over the rock into the shore. These limited edition images I printed as kallitypes and collodion printing out paper. This collodion image is the only one of its kind.

I looked back up the cliffs to the tree line to see how far I’ve come. The patterns formed into the rocks showed me how powerful the ocean is. Seagulls filled the sky dancing and singing in the air. It was a crowded spot, people wandered the rocks alongs the shore. I wondered how many of them were also seeking fall photos. Either way, it was just a beautiful day to be outside enjoying the ocean views.
