Above the Treetops

As we headed west, there was still a large amount of green leaves on the trees, and there was some concern that it was going to be too early for good foliage. However, as we got closer to our destination, we saw the colors start to enfold us, and we knew we were right on time.

Into the Mountains

The terrain gradually became more mountainous. A mountain in the distance became increasingly close until it was apparent that we were ascending into the mountains. They were not as numerous or as enclosing as Vermont mountains, but it was close enough to feel like home.

Eagerly keeping an eye on the GPS, it showed we were only 3 minutes away. Every opening on the side of the mountain we climbed seemed that it could be it. Then, turning around a wide corner the trees opened up to the left of the road and revealed the vast scenic overlook of Height of the Land. We had arrived at last.

Standing above the treetops, the colors extended for miles to distant hazy peaks on the horizon. Oceans of reds, oranges, and yellows with pine greens sprinkled in. The chill clung to the air amplified by the strong winds of this crisp fall day. Autumn is here.

The second location was equally as magnificent. The sun shone through the trees illuminating the colorful leaves as we circled up the dirt road to to the very top. The 360 view at the summit of Quill Hill appeared even more expansive. From every angle the view was breathtaking.

The descent from the top of the mountain was as gorgeous as it was on the way up, the afternoon sun glowing through the colorful leaves. The road was too narrow to get out for photographs with a line of cars behind us,, but that made it no less enjoyable in the moment.

The return home was a race against the dropping sun to see the golden hour light shine upon the trees casting reflections in the calm river waters following the winding roads. The sun finally dropped behind the mountains, leaving the land before us in shadow. The adventures were coming to a close for this weekend, with endless opportunities for the future. After all, this was only the beginning of fall.
